Interesting that the experts mention how frequently we lie without realizing it. It's usually the little 'white lies' that get us - or omission of truth, which is basically the same thing.
If you tell a lie to your friend because you're afraid of hurting his/her feelings, I think you have to analyze whether that will hurt them more in the long run. For example: if you don't follow up on why they're always out drinking and partying all the time - or whatever, they'll just continue to mask the fact that they have a problem and it won't get better. So in the end, you're not helping them at all.
